Hurricane Isaias Halts 1.28 Million Barrels of Gulf Oil Daily

Hurricane Isaias forced the suspension of 1.28 million barrels of daily U.S. Gulf oil production by Thursday, a sharp escalation from the 185,120 barrels sidelined just 48 hours earlier as energy operators scrambled to clear personnel and equipment from the path of the season’s first hurricane.

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, reporting via the Marine Minerals Administration, confirmed that 62.89% of current Gulf oil output and 57.35% of natural gas production have been shuttered. Operators have evacuated 121 production platforms, accounting for nearly a third of all manned facilities in the region. Additionally, four of the Gulf’s 17 dynamically positioned rigs have moved off location to avoid the storm's core.

The shutdown pace accelerated rapidly throughout the week. On Tuesday, only 9.24% of oil output was offline, but as the storm strengthened toward a projected Category 3 intensity, the number of reporting companies involved in the survey jumped to 12. Forecasts indicate the system will likely make landfall early Saturday, threatening the Florida Panhandle and Alabama with significant storm surges and heavy rainfall exceeding 10 inches.

Energy markets are already feeling the strain. Beyond the Gulf disruptions, West Texas Intermediate and Brent crude prices surged by $4 and $5 per barrel respectively, fueled by additional supply anxieties linked to geopolitical incidents in Riyadh. Offshore production will remain offline until facilities pass mandatory safety inspections, with the potential for extended outages should infrastructure sustain damage during the storm's passage.
