Tanker Struck by Projectiles North of Qatar in Rare Deep-Gulf Attack

A vessel sustained damage from multiple projectiles 51 nautical miles north of Madinat ash Shamal, Qatar, marking the deepest strike within the Persian Gulf in nearly a month. UK Maritime Trade Operations confirmed the incident late Wednesday, as authorities scramble to assess casualties and the escalating security threat to regional shipping lanes.

The attack breaks a month-long lull in deep-water strikes, shifting focus away from the Strait of Hormuz where regional tensions have recently concentrated. Since September 9, when a tanker was hit southeast of Al-Faw, Iraq, maritime security had largely been preoccupied with incidents confined to the narrow chokepoint. However, the surge in activity is now testing the resilience of energy supply lines as crude flows approach pre-war levels.

Security data highlights a sharp deterioration in maritime safety. In the first week of October alone, UKMTO documented nine attacks near the Strait of Hormuz, equaling half the total volume recorded throughout the previous month. Independent data from maritime security sources suggests the situation is even more volatile, with at least 12 strikes on oil, LNG, and LPG tankers reported in the week leading up to October 5.

The US Navy-led Joint Maritime Information Center recently noted that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps continues to employ UAV overflights, targeted surveillance, and persistent VHF hailing to pressure merchant vessels. These maneuvers appear designed to assert control over critical transit corridors, forcing oil exporters to navigate an increasingly hostile environment that threatens both crew safety and global energy pricing.
