Franklin Templeton CEO Calls Out Tokenized Fund Rivals

At the TOKEN2049 conference in Singapore, Franklin Templeton CEO Jenny Johnson challenged the industry's approach to tokenization, labeling many rival products as mere "digital twins." She argued that firms are often keeping legacy recordkeeping systems intact while merely using blockchains as a superficial layer for their assets.

Johnson differentiates her firm’s BENJI platform by its native integration, where the blockchain serves as the primary system of record. According to the company’s research, a "digital twin" model functions only as a tokenized mirror of offchain data, whereas the BENJI architecture embeds ownership and transaction details directly into the distributed ledger. This approach, launched in 2021 with the Franklin OnChain U.S. Government Money Fund, allows for second-by-second yield accrual and real-time reconciliation.

While Johnson highlighted cost efficiency during her panel—citing a transaction cost of $1.13 compared to significantly higher legacy fees—the math remains a point of contention. A January 2026 earnings transcript suggests that $1.13 was the total cost for 50,000 transactions on Stellar, rather than a per-transaction savings over a $150 legacy benchmark. Despite the discrepancy in reporting, the platform continues to scale, with RWA.xyz data placing Franklin Templeton’s distributed assets at approximately $2.6 billion across multiple public networks, including Stellar, Polygon, and Avalanche.

Regulatory support has also broadened the fund's utility. An August SEC staff letter provided no-action relief, allowing affiliated funds to invest in BENJI under strict reconciliation and independent oversight protocols. These developments, paired with institutional integrations on platforms like Bybit and Binance, position Franklin Templeton to push its onchain model further into traditional finance, even as the company navigates the complexities of maintaining administrative control over decentralized records.
