Cardano Foundation Spins Out Identity Firm Veridian

After three years of internal development, the Cardano Foundation has transitioned its digital identity project, Veridian, into an independent commercial entity. The spinout aims to provide decentralized verification tools for governments and enterprises, leveraging a newly deployed token standard to manage its equity on the Cardano blockchain.

Veridian’s shares are now issued as ledger-based securities under Switzerland’s DLT Act, marking the first asset deployment on Cardano using the CIP-0113 programmable token standard. This framework allows issuers to embed identity checks and transfer restrictions directly into the asset, requiring a successful script verification before any change in ownership. CEO Thomas A. Mayfield, who leads the new company, intends to focus on government identity systems, enterprise operations in Europe, and verification tools for autonomous AI agents.

The firm’s expansion strategy centers on the United States, specifically targeting state-level digital identity legislation. Veridian claims to have already mapped all 142 requirements within Utah’s state-endorsed digital identity implementation guide. According to the Foundation, this push addresses the growing risks of centralized identity databases, which remain vulnerable to data breaches. Javelin Strategy & Research estimated that identity fraud cost U.S. consumers $27.3 billion in 2025, a figure the company cites as a primary driver for its decentralized credential system.

While operating independently, Veridian maintains close ties to its parent organization. Cardano Foundation CEO Frederik Gregaard has been appointed as chair of the company’s board, joined by chief legal officer Nicolas Jacquemart. The company plans to secure strategic partners and external investors in 2027 to scale its operations across the U.S., Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. Currently, the Veridian platform—which utilizes KERI and ACDC open identity standards—is already being integrated into AI payment networks like Masumi to verify the authority of agents executing blockchain transactions.
