UK Selects Six Banks for Maiden Digital Gilt Issuance

The British government has tapped six major financial institutions to spearhead its inaugural digital bond issuance, targeting a pilot launch in early 2027. This initiative, known as DIGIT, marks a pivotal move to test distributed ledger technology within the state's debt management framework via the Digital Securities Sandbox.

Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Morgan Stanley, NatWest, and RBC Capital Markets will serve as joint lead managers for the project. These firms are tasked with underwriting, managing investor relations, and distributing the short-dated bond. Economic Secretary to the Treasury Lucy Rigby confirmed the appointments at UK Digital Assets Week, noting that the government intends to list the instrument on the London Stock Exchange’s main market.

The project utilizes HSBC’s Orion platform to host the bond, with on-chain settlement occurring inside the Digital Securities Sandbox. By operating independently of the government’s primary debt management program, the pilot aims to determine if blockchain infrastructure can effectively reduce settlement times and operational costs. The Bank of England has signaled it may eventually accept these digital gilts as collateral in market operations.

Technical integration remains a critical focus as the Treasury works with the London Stock Exchange Group to develop a bilateral Digital Securities Depository link. Experts emphasize that the success of the project hinges on seamless connectivity between digital assets, cash, and existing custody systems. To support this, the government plans to introduce secondary legislation in the coming months, while international regulators continue to explore common standards for cross-border tokenized settlement.
