Ethereum tests 200 million gas limit on Sepolia testnet

Ethereum developers are pushing network capacity to its limits, initiating a 200 million gas ceiling on the Sepolia testnet under the Glamsterdam upgrade. This public stress test aims to determine whether validators can maintain stability while processing more than triple the current 60 million gas block capacity.

The transition to a 200 million gas limit is a critical component of the Glamsterdam roadmap, designed to expand block space and reduce transaction competition during periods of high demand. To ensure consistent data during the trial, Prysm released version 7.2.1, which automates the new gas limit for validators upon the activation scheduled for October 6 at 13:53:36 UTC. Previous versions risked defaulting to the older 60 million setting, which would have compromised the uniformity of the test.

While the expansion promises more room for swaps and smart contract interactions, it does not guarantee immediate fee reductions, as costs remain tied to network activity and specific operational pricing. The upgrade also introduces EIP 8037 to recalibrate the cost of state creation, acknowledging that expanding block capacity must be balanced against the risk of rapid, unsustainable growth in the network’s permanent state. Following a successful private rehearsal on Devnet 11, the Sepolia deployment serves as the final public hurdle before developers consider a mainnet timeline, for which no date has been set.
