JERA Spins Off Oil Storage Unit Amid Supply Chain Volatility

With over 90% of Japan’s crude imports flowing through the volatile Strait of Hormuz, energy giant JERA is consolidating its defensive posture. The company announced the creation of JERA Oil Storage, a dedicated entity tasked with managing four critical national petroleum stockpiling bases currently under its operational control.

The new subsidiary will take over operations at the Tomakomai-Tobu, Akita, Fukui, and Shibushi facilities, which are managed alongside the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC). By isolating these assets into a specialized firm, JERA aims to centralize technical expertise and harden its logistics against the mounting pressures of an unstable global market.

Japan’s reliance on Middle Eastern crude has forced a frantic diversification of its supply chain. Facing severe geopolitical risk, the nation has increasingly turned to imports from Canada, Azerbaijan, and Africa. These logistical pivots, however, carry a heavy premium; soaring import bills now threaten to dampen domestic industrial activity. As Tokyo participates in coordinated international efforts to tap into strategic reserves, the restructuring of its storage management signals a long-term shift toward prioritizing energy security over traditional procurement efficiency.
