U.S. Pressures Europe to Tap Diesel Reserves to Avert Export Ban

With domestic diesel prices hovering near record highs of $6.50 per gallon, the U.S. administration is pushing Germany and France to release emergency fuel stockpiles. Officials warn that failing to bolster global supply could force the White House to impose a restrictive ban on American diesel exports.

U.S. Pressures Europe to Tap Diesel Reserves to Avert Export Ban

Germany and France currently control roughly 35% of the European Union’s strategic diesel reserves. Washington argues that these nations have withheld significant portions of the fuel they initially pledged to release following the start of the war in Iran. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright signaled that imminent announcements from European partners regarding new supplies are expected to help stabilize the market and drive down costs.

While the prospect of an export ban remains on the table, President Trump expressed caution regarding the potential fallout. During an Oval Office briefing, he noted that such a measure could inadvertently trigger a negative impact on gasoline prices. The administration is now prioritizing diplomatic pressure on IEA member states to honor their previous drawdown commitments rather than immediately restricting the flow of American fuel abroad.
