Tokenized Assets Surge to $34B as Equity Trading Diverges from Tradition

The market for tokenized real-world assets has crossed the $34 billion threshold, revealing a distinct shift in investor behavior. While cash-equivalent products dominate in total value, tokenized equities have emerged as the primary engine of onchain secondary trading, signaling a departure from the index-heavy trends seen in traditional finance.

Tokenized Assets Surge to $34B as Equity Trading Diverges from Tradition

Dune’s latest quarterly analysis highlights a striking contrast between asset supply and market activity. Although tokenized equities represent a small fraction of the total RWA market, they generated 93% of spot trading volume during August. In a move that defies traditional market conventions, investors are favoring single-stock tokens over packaged ETFs, with individual stocks accounting for 81% of equity holdings. This trend suggests that onchain participants are bypassing the diversification typical of institutional equity markets to focus on direct exposure to specific firms.

This growth occurs alongside regulatory developments in the United States. On September 17, the Securities and Exchange Commission granted a five-year conditional exemption allowing select venues to test the trading of tokenized U.S. stocks. While this opens a regulated pathway, it remains limited to tokens that mirror the full rights of traditional shares. Concurrently, industry players are moving to bridge the gap between legacy and digital infrastructure; Blockchain.com and the NYSE Group have entered an agreement to explore 24/7 access to tokenized stocks, though the initiative remains in the preliminary stages.

Despite the rapid acceleration—with Binance Research noting a 390.4% increase in tokenized equity value through mid-September—the sector remains a niche component of the global financial system. The $4.43 billion in tracked equity tokens accounts for less than 0.003% of the $151.9 trillion listed equity market. As the ecosystem matures, the focus remains on the 'capital activation rate,' tracking how effectively these assets are deployed into lending protocols and liquidity pools rather than simply sitting idle on balance sheets.
