DogeOS launches testnet to bring smart contracts to Dogecoin

DogeOS has officially opened its public testnet, introducing an EVM-compatible layer that allows developers to deploy smart contracts using DOGE for transaction fees. The launch follows a $6.9 million funding round led by Polychain Capital, marking a shift toward expanding the memecoin’s utility beyond simple peer-to-peer transfers.

The testnet arrives as an infrastructure milestone for the project, which aims to support decentralized finance, gaming, and prediction markets. Current applications being built on the platform include the Barkswap liquidity engine, Superposition Finance’s lending protocol, and various stablecoin projects like USDoge. CEO Jordan Jefferson stated that the team’s immediate focus remains on network validation and providing developers with a testing environment, with a mainnet timeline to follow once further milestones are met.

Technically, DogeOS functions as a zero-knowledge rollup, though its current security model relies on a permissioned sequencer, validator signatures, and a trusted execution environment. While the team has proposed a Dogecoin Core upgrade to enable native ZK-proof verification—which would allow miners to verify execution proofs directly—that change has not yet been implemented. Timothy Stebbing, director of the Dogecoin Foundation, welcomed the development, framing the platform as a potential springboard for new engineering utility within the Dogecoin ecosystem.
