Foreign Investors Dump Indian Assets as Oil Prices Breach $100

A sharp resurgence in Brent crude prices above $100 per barrel has triggered a massive $3.2 billion capital flight from Indian markets this month. This reversal marks the most significant exit of foreign liquidity since March, as escalating geopolitical hostilities cloud the outlook for Asia’s third-largest economy and its currency.

Foreign investors offloaded $2.1 billion in Indian equities alongside $1.1 billion in sovereign bonds throughout September. This sell-off abruptly halts a four-month streak of net inflows that saw record capital accumulation in June, a period when temporary stability in the Strait of Hormuz provided a brief reprieve for regional markets.

The rupee now faces renewed downward pressure, ranking among Asia's weakest performers this quarter. According to Gautam Chhaochharia, head of global markets for India at UBS Group, crude volatility remains the primary driver behind this exodus. With Brent at $103 and WTI at $89 per barrel, analysts at UBS warn that sustained energy inflation will likely stifle stock market gains well into the coming months.
