Cboe Secures S&P 500 Options Monopoly Through 2051

Cboe Global Markets has locked in the exclusive rights to trade S&P 500 options for the next quarter-century, extending its lucrative licensing agreement with S&P Dow Jones Indices through 2051. The deal arrives as the exchange operator logs record-breaking volume for its flagship SPX contracts, which saw 970.6 million units traded in 2025.

The renewal provides long-term stability for Cboe’s most significant revenue stream, pushing the expiration of the previous 2033 agreement deep into the next decade. While royalty terms remain static through 2026, the company expects the adjustment in 2027 to have a negligible impact on overall growth. Investors responded favorably to the news, with shares climbing 6.6% in premarket activity following the announcement.

Beyond the contract extension, the partners flagged tokenized options as a potential area for future collaboration. Despite this pivot toward blockchain-integrated finance, the companies stopped short of providing a roadmap, settlement design, or regulatory filing. This exploratory interest remains purely conceptual, contrasting with aggressive infrastructure plays by competitors like the Intercontinental Exchange, which recently partnered with tZERO to build a tokenized securities platform. For now, Cboe’s focus remains on maintaining the record-setting momentum of its current SPX franchise, which reached an average daily volume of 3.9 million contracts this year.
