ECB Launches Innovation Program to Test AI-Driven Digital Euro Payments

The European Central Bank is inviting fintechs, researchers, and payment firms to explore how artificial intelligence could reshape the future of the digital euro. By opening applications for a new innovation platform, the central bank aims to test autonomous AI agents, micropayments, and machine-to-machine interactions starting in early 2027.

ECB Launches Innovation Program to Test AI-Driven Digital Euro Payments

The initiative, which runs through the first half of 2027, focuses on two distinct tracks: workshops to brainstorm AI-enabled use cases and an experimentation program dedicated to building working prototypes. Participants are expected to develop solutions for electronic receipts, multiparty transactions, and conditional payments, all while navigating strict privacy-by-design requirements. The ECB emphasized that these tests remain exploratory, ensuring that any potential integration of AI agents into the digital euro infrastructure respects user control and data protection standards.

This innovation program operates independently from the ECB’s broader 12-month digital euro pilot, which is scheduled to commence in the second half of 2027 with 36 selected payment providers, including Deutsche Bank, Revolut, and Stripe. While the bank continues to refine the technical framework for a potential retail currency, any final decision to issue the digital euro depends on the adoption of European Union legislation. Current projections suggest a possible readiness for issuance by 2029, provided the legal and technical development phases remain on schedule. Interested organizations have until November 9 to submit applications for the innovation track, with workshops hosted at the bank's Frankfurt headquarters.
