French probe eyes VRA crypto manipulation in €50 million Dubai real estate

French authorities have placed a Russian-born citizen, identified as Svetlana A., under formal investigation for suspected organized fraud and money laundering. Investigators are scrutinizing whether the artificial inflation of the VRA cryptocurrency helped finance a massive real estate portfolio in Dubai worth over €50 million.

The investigation, led by a Paris judge and the National Brigade for the Repression of Tax Fraud, centers on a period in spring 2021 when the VRA token surged roughly 65-fold. Judicial sources suggest this speculative spike may have been engineered to funnel illicit proceeds into property holdings. Records indicate that in 2022 alone, the suspect acquired approximately 100 apartments and three luxury villas across developments like Burj Royale and Opera Grand. One notable transaction involved the €17.4 million purchase of the entire Amara Residences building.

Patent records and corporate filings provide a trail linking the suspect to the Verasity ecosystem. Svetlana Astakhova is listed alongside Robert James Mark Hain—the founder of Verasity—as an inventor on patents for video-viewing technology. Furthermore, until July 2023, she served as a person with significant control over Veraviews Limited, an advertising tech entity within the Verasity group. While her previous legal counsel denied any connection between her property assets and the cryptocurrency’s performance, investigators continue to probe the suspicious overlap between these digital assets and the offshore real estate acquisitions.
