Jason Calacanis labels meme coins a giant scam

Technology investor Jason Calacanis has publicly disavowed the meme coin sector, characterizing the entire asset class as a giant scam. His statement arrives amid a wave of social media impersonation attacks, prompting the investor to clarify that he neither endorses these tokens nor privately solicits financial trades from his followers.

The investor took to X on September 27 to draw a hard line between his interest in specific digital assets and the speculative meme coin market. While Calacanis acknowledged he is a fan of Bitcoin and Bittensor’s TAO, he stated he has no involvement with any meme projects and vowed that any funds sent to his accounts by such operators would be donated to charity. He further warned his audience that he would never reach out via direct messages or social media to suggest buying, selling, or trading any asset.

His declaration highlights the growing trend of public figures being forced to distance themselves from unauthorized token launches. While Calacanis did not report a specific security breach of his own account, the ecosystem remains rife with bad actors leveraging the names of influencers and executives to drive artificial demand. Recent high-profile incidents have included the compromise of accounts belonging to Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev and trader Keith Gill, both of which were weaponized to promote fraudulent tokens.

Despite the criticism, the meme coin market continues to command significant capital. According to CoinGecko data, the sector holds a combined market capitalization of roughly $35.9 billion. Major assets like Dogecoin and Shiba Inu anchor the category, which often derives value from community momentum rather than traditional financial utility. Calacanis previously advised that individuals should avoid such speculative assets unless they are prepared to lose their entire investment, a stance he has now elevated by questioning the legitimacy of the tokens themselves.
