UK banks complete world-first interbank tokenized deposit trials

Britain’s largest financial institutions have successfully executed the world’s first interbank transactions using tokenized deposits, marking a shift toward blockchain-based commercial money. The trial, led by UK Finance, utilized programmable assets to settle mortgage payments and simulated online marketplace purchases across separate banking infrastructures.

The initiative, known as the Great British Tokenised Deposit project, involved a consortium including Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group, NatWest, Nationwide, and Santander. By enabling digital representations of sterling deposits to move between institutions, the pilot overcomes previous limitations where blockchain experiments were confined to closed, individual systems. In the marketplace simulation, programmable deposits allowed funds to remain reserved in a buyer’s account, releasing them to the seller only upon confirmation of receipt—a mechanism designed to significantly reduce fraud risks.

Following these results, UK Finance intends to form a dedicated company to establish a formal governance framework. The project roadmap includes the issuance and settlement of three digital bonds scheduled for the first quarter of 2027. This move aligns with broader efforts by the Bank of England to integrate tokenized bank deposits, regulated stablecoins, and traditional currency within a unified financial architecture. While regulators continue to refine the rules for digital assets, the success of these interbank tests has already drawn interest from international jurisdictions seeking to modernize their own payment infrastructures.
