Zcash Foundation Distances Itself From Unofficial Token Standards

The Zcash Foundation has officially disavowed any connection to the ZRC-20 token standard and the associated CASH token, following a mysterious promotional post on its X account. The organization clarified that these projects were developed independently and do not constitute sanctioned features of the privacy-focused Zcash blockchain.

Zcash Foundation Distances Itself From Unofficial Token Standards

The Foundation stated it had no prior knowledge of the ZRC-20 project before it appeared on its social media feed. The incident, which remains unexplained by the nonprofit, prompted an immediate warning to users to exercise caution, as the system was neither created nor endorsed by the developers responsible for the Zcash protocol. While the initial post claimed Zcash now possessed a token standard, the Foundation has since confirmed that ZRC-20 operates entirely outside its official governance and technical oversight.

Technically, ZRC-20 functions as a draft specification that embeds JSON instructions within the 512-byte memo fields of shielded Zcash transactions. Rather than utilizing the Zcash consensus mechanism, the system relies on external indexers to track balances and validate token transfers. This design mirrors the structure of Bitcoin’s BRC-20 format, yet it introduces significant security and privacy implications, as the indexing process requires the disclosure of viewing keys for memo decryption. Because ZRC-20 does not seek approval through the formal Zcash Improvement Proposal (ZIP) process, it lacks the vetting required for core network updates. Consequently, investors are left to navigate the project’s opaque origins, as no clear legal entity or development team has claimed responsibility for the token’s operation.
