Coinbase Expands Beyond Crypto with Retail IPO Access

Retail investors on Coinbase can now participate in initial public offerings, starting with the $2.2 billion market debut of smart-ring maker Oura. The exchange is positioning the new feature as a cornerstone of its strategy to consolidate diverse financial instruments, from crypto to equity, into a single mobile application.

Coinbase Expands Beyond Crypto with Retail IPO Access

Eligible U.S. customers can submit conditional offers for Oura shares directly through the Coinbase mobile app. The process requires users to fund accounts in advance, with final allocations determined by demand and underwriter availability once the order book closes. Shares are offered through Coinbase Capital Markets, a FINRA-registered broker-dealer that acts as an agent to facilitate these transactions rather than holding inventory itself.

To discourage short-term speculation, Coinbase has implemented a restrictive allocation policy. Investors who sell their IPO shares within 30 days of the offering face a 60-day ban from future allocations. The company’s algorithm explicitly prioritizes participants who demonstrate a commitment to long-term holding. Meanwhile, the market responded positively to the announcement, with Coinbase shares climbing 5.7% to $205.38 on September 21.

Oura is set to list on the Nasdaq under the ticker OURA, offering 50 million shares at a price range of $40 to $44. This service is the latest in a series of expansions for the exchange, which recently introduced SEC-registered investment advisory services and moved to secure approval for single-stock perpetual contracts. As the platform evolves, it increasingly blurs the line between a dedicated cryptocurrency exchange and a comprehensive brokerage.
