Macron Pushes for G7 Emergency Oil Release as Diesel Prices Surge

French President Emmanuel Macron is rallying G7 leaders to coordinate a fresh release of strategic petroleum reserves, aiming to stabilize energy markets as European diesel prices reach record highs and Saudi crude shipments remain disrupted following a critical pipeline attack.

Macron Pushes for G7 Emergency Oil Release as Diesel Prices Surge

Diesel benchmarks have climbed past $200 per barrel this week, with retail costs effectively exceeding $300 once taxes are factored in. The supply crunch is exacerbated by Russia’s ongoing export restrictions and constrained output from Middle Eastern producers. Compounding these pressures, Saudi Aramco recently informed European refiners that October crude deliveries under term contracts would be halted, forcing buyers to seek costly alternatives in the North Sea.

While the IEA has already depleted over 300 million barrels of emergency stock since March, Europe holds a distinct advantage in its reserves: a significant volume of finished fuels like gasoline and diesel. Macron intends to leverage this strategic capacity to mitigate the immediate shortfall. However, while coordinated releases may provide temporary relief, analysts caution that these measures cannot address the structural supply limitations or the logistical damage to critical energy infrastructure.
