Japan Secures November Crude Stocks Amid Middle East Supply Volatility

With over 90% of its crude imports historically reliant on the volatile Strait of Hormuz, Japan has successfully secured enough oil to bridge local demand through November. The move comes as regional infrastructure disruptions and geopolitical tensions force the nation to rethink its long-term energy security strategy.

Japan Secures November Crude Stocks Amid Middle East Supply Volatility

Petroleum Association of Japan president Shunichi Kito confirmed that despite recent logistical hurdles, including the temporary shutdown of Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline, flows to Japanese refineries remain stable. Saudi suppliers have circumvented traditional bottlenecks by utilizing shuttle-shipping methods, moving crude beyond the Strait of Hormuz before completing transfers to Japanese tankers.

While these tactical workarounds prevent immediate shortages, the financial strain is intensifying. Japan is increasingly diversifying its import portfolio, sourcing crude from Canada, Azerbaijan, and African nations to mitigate reliance on the Persian Gulf. This shift, combined with participation in an IEA-coordinated release of strategic reserves, aims to insulate the G-7 economy from supply shocks. However, the premium paid to secure cargoes from more distant markets is driving up import bills, creating significant pressure on domestic industrial activity.
