South Korea leads global surge in retail stock and crypto interest

South Korea has emerged as the world’s most active hub for retail investment research, recording a 95.7% year-over-year surge in online searches for stocks and cryptocurrencies. This sharp uptick, identified in a September 2026 study by Coin Insider, positions the nation at the forefront of a broader international shift toward digital and equity-based asset exploration.

The analysis, which evaluated search trends across 45 countries, highlights a significant appetite for financial market engagement. While search volume does not directly equate to realized trades, the data reflects where individual investors are increasingly looking to deploy capital. South Korea’s dominance is supported by a robust domestic equity market, with capitalization reaching 147.2% of GDP and gross savings at 35.6%. This financial environment has fostered a culture where retail participants are quick to react to market opportunities, though regulators remain cautious. Authorities recently proposed capping individual exposure to leveraged single-stock exchange-traded funds at 20%, citing concerns over volatility linked to major tech shares like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.

Following South Korea, Singapore and Spain secured the second and third positions with growth rates of 66% and 61% respectively. In Singapore, high gross savings—equivalent to 40% of GDP—provide a substantial foundation for investment activity. Spain’s growth, meanwhile, appears driven by residents seeking alternatives to traditional bank deposits. The global trend is further rounded out by Argentina and Bangladesh, where search interest rose by roughly 50% and 49%. In Argentina, this interest is closely tied to persistent inflation and the pursuit of value preservation. Conversely, U.S. and Canadian markets saw more modest growth of around 30%. Analysts attribute this widespread increase in retail curiosity to the proliferation of mobile trading platforms, which have lowered the barrier to entry for global financial markets, allowing users to access foreign equities and crypto assets with unprecedented ease.
