Malone Lam set to plead guilty in $240 million Bitcoin theft

Malone Lam, the 22-year-old Singaporean accused of orchestrating the theft of 4,100 Bitcoin from a Washington resident, is scheduled to enter a plea agreement on Tuesday. His admission will mark the 11th conviction in a sprawling social engineering case that saw millions laundered through luxury jets, mansions, and nightclubs.

Federal prosecutors allege that Lam and his associates targeted a wealthy, longtime cryptocurrency investor in August 2024. By posing as representatives from Google and the Gemini exchange, the group manipulated the victim into disclosing security codes and granting access to a personal Google Drive, effectively draining his digital wallet of over $240 million. The theft was part of a broader criminal operation, with investigators tracing the suspects through an unmasked IP address linked to a $47,500-a-month rental home in Encino, California.

Following the heist, the group engaged in a highly public spending spree. FBI records indicate Lam alone dropped $569,000 in a single night at a Los Angeles nightclub, while other members purchased fleets of high-end vehicles, including Lamborghinis and Porsches. The group's internal pressure tactics eventually turned violent; after one participant, Veer Chetal, attempted to withhold his share, masked attackers abducted his parents in Connecticut to force his compliance. Authorities intervened before the kidnapping could escalate further.

While Lam faces a potential prison term of at least 14 years under federal sentencing guidelines, his case highlights the persistent vulnerability of crypto holders to non-technical social engineering. Despite the arrests, experts note that such fraud remains a lucrative draw for young offenders. U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, who is presiding over the proceedings, has already dismissed defense arguments characterizing the defendants as merely mischievous youth, maintaining that the severity of the financial destruction warrants significant custodial sentences.
