AMC CEO Adam Aron Pushes Back Against Robinhood’s Tokenized Shares

AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron has publicly disavowed a suite of tokenized products offered by Robinhood that track the theater chain’s stock price. Labeling the brokerage's unauthorized use of the AMC brand as "contemptible" and "outrageous," the executive announced plans to seek formal legal counsel to address the matter.

The conflict centers on the distinction between actual equity and the derivative-style assets Robinhood markets as Stock Tokens. While these tokens provide investors with economic exposure to AMC’s share price, they confer no ownership, voting, or shareholder rights. Robinhood’s model, which operates under MiFID II regulations in Europe, utilizes derivative contracts or debt securities issued by its Jersey-based entity to mimic the performance of underlying assets without a direct partnership with the companies involved.

This is not the first time Robinhood has faced friction over its tokenization strategy. In July, OpenAI explicitly rejected similar products linked to its private shares, clarifying that the tokens were neither equity nor endorsed by the firm. Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev has defended these products as a means to provide retail investors with indirect market access, yet the lack of issuer participation remains a point of contention. As financial firms race to integrate real-world assets onto blockchains, the divide between derivative-based models and 1:1-backed structures—such as those explored by Coinbase—continues to widen, leaving companies like AMC to challenge how their corporate identity is utilized in decentralized finance.
