The Quest for White Hydrogen Shifts from Theory to Drilling

Geologists are pivoting from the struggles of manufactured green hydrogen to a subterranean frontier: white hydrogen. Across Australia, Canada, and the United States, researchers and mining firms are now mapping underground deposits, betting that natural gas trapped within ancient rock formations can provide a cheaper, scalable alternative to electrolysis.

In Western Australia, researchers at Edith Cowan University have identified a breakthrough method for tapping into hydrogen trapped within iron ore deposits. By replicating deep-earth conditions, the team demonstrated how injecting solutions into magnetite-rich banded iron formations can stimulate hydrogen production. Lead author Kaveh Moghanirahimi suggests this process could turn vast geological formations into viable energy assets, provided the extraction can be scaled to industrial levels.

Simultaneously, North American exploration is accelerating. In Canada, scientists at the University of Toronto and the University of Ottawa have confirmed significant hydrogen accumulation within the Canadian Shield. This discovery has already prompted commercial action, with Max Power Mining drilling a validation well reaching depths of 2,278 meters in Saskatchewan. Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey has mapped prospective hydrogen zones spanning from the Midwest to the Eastern seaboard. Companies like HyTerra are currently moving beyond the mapping phase, conducting active production testing at sites in Kansas and Nebraska to determine if these natural reservoirs can sustain commercial energy projects.
