Traditional geothermal energy has long been confined to rare geological hotspots like Iceland, but new ventures are borrowing drilling techniques from the oil and gas sector to access heat almost anywhere. Quaise Energy’s latest round, which includes a $35 million investment from drilling giant Nabors Industries, focuses on utilizing high-frequency waves to penetrate basement rock at extreme depths. By reaching temperatures far beyond conventional capabilities, the company expects to transition geothermal from a niche regional resource into a globally scalable power solution.
The timing aligns with a surge in electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence and hyperscale data centers. According to the Rhodium Group, advanced geothermal could potentially satisfy up to 64 percent of the projected growth in data center energy needs by the early 2030s. Unlike solar or wind, this generation method is not intermittent, providing a stable baseload that could reduce reliance on fossil fuels for both grid power and HVAC systems. As the industry matures, it faces the challenge of scaling commercial operations while avoiding the regulatory and public opposition bottlenecks that have historically slowed nuclear and renewable energy infrastructure projects.
