Gold hits record CAD $6,087 as Bank of Canada signals trade-war risks

Gold surged to CAD $6,087.64 per ounce as the Bank of Canada held its overnight rate at 2.25% on Wednesday. While the central bank acknowledged a second-quarter GDP rebound of 3.3%, it warned that escalating trade tensions with the United States and persistent energy costs cloud the nation's economic recovery.

The Canadian dollar slipped to 1.3869 against the U.S. dollar following the announcement, reflecting market jitters over the breakdown of bilateral trade talks. Bank officials highlighted that while the unemployment rate edged down to 6.4% in July, labor demand remains subdued and inflationary pressures from high energy prices are becoming a growing concern for the Governing Council.

Policy makers explicitly flagged that new U.S. tariffs and subsequent Canadian counter-measures introduce significant uncertainty. Although core inflation remains near 2%, the bank cautioned that the longer oil prices and refinery margins remain elevated, the greater the risk that these costs will bleed into the broader economy. With global bond yields rising, the bank remains wary of the sustainability of current growth, noting that the situation regarding trade remains fluid.
