Armed Home Invasion in Alès Highlights Surge in Crypto-Targeted Violence

The Organized and Specialized Crime Division in Nîmes has launched an investigation into the assault, which occurred in a residential area on the heights of the city. While the attackers escaped before officers arrived, the incident reflects a broader, alarming trend across France. By June, authorities had recorded 77 cases of kidnapping, extortion, or unlawful detention connected to digital assets, significantly outpacing the 45 incidents logged during all of 2025.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez recently noted that while some criminal operations originate from outside French borders, they rely on local recruits to execute the violence. Data from Chainalysis and CertiK corroborates this shift, noting that home invasions now account for over a third of documented physical crypto attacks. In a similar case last month in Rion-des-Landes, a couple was abducted from their home and held for ransom, while earlier this year, a resident in Yvelines was forced to surrender nearly €900,000 in Bitcoin after attackers posed as police officers to gain entry.
