U.S. Seeks Foothold in Venezuelan Oil Fields to Boost Supply

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright signaled that Venezuela’s crude output could potentially double within years, contingent on fresh agreements with foreign firms. During a visit to Caracas, Wright suggested that while increased production might ease global price pressures, the primary bottleneck for gasoline and diesel remains limited refining capacity.

U.S. Seeks Foothold in Venezuelan Oil Fields to Boost Supply

Venezuela’s oil sector, once a powerhouse capable of pumping 3 million barrels daily in the late 1990s, has withered to 1.25 million barrels this year under the weight of sanctions and chronic underinvestment. Current exports hover near 1 million barrels per day, with Gulf Coast refiners serving as the primary destination for these shipments.

Washington is now moving toward a more direct role in the country's energy infrastructure. President Trump recently characterized a new arrangement involving 17 high-yield fields as a historic milestone. The deal secures the federal government a 35% stake in a venture linked to North American Blue Energy Partners, granting the U.S. priority access to production at cost and a right of first refusal on remaining output. Achieving the target of 1.5 million barrels per day from these fields remains a capital-intensive challenge, with Rystad Energy estimating that the necessary infrastructure overhaul will require $180 billion in investment over the next decade.
