CME Group Debuts Multi-Asset Indexes Targeting Altcoin Market

CME Group has rolled out two new cryptocurrency benchmarks, including an index specifically designed to track ten altcoins while excluding Bitcoin and Ethereum. CME Group Debuts Multi-Asset Indexes Targeting Altcoin Market

The CME CF Emerging Crypto Index and the CME CF Crypto Market Index went live this Monday, offering distinct tracking capabilities for the evolving digital asset landscape. The emerging index focuses on a basket of 10 assets, including Solana, XRP, BNB, and Hyperliquid, while intentionally omitting the two largest market leaders. Its companion, the Crypto Market Index, tracks a 12-asset basket that incorporates both Bitcoin and Ether, providing a broader view of the total market capitalization.

Both benchmarks update in real-time every second and operate continuously to mirror the 24-hour nature of crypto markets. Settlement versions are published daily at 4 p.m. in London, New York, and Singapore/Hong Kong. To maintain accuracy, CME plans to reconstitute and rebalance these baskets every June and December. Eligibility criteria are strict: the indices exclude meme coins and require assets to pass specific custody and protocol-use tests. This methodology is tailored to facilitate passive replication, allowing financial firms to license these indexes for investment products and derivatives beyond simple spot pricing.
