Gold slips below $4,550 as consumer sentiment hits 51.7

Spot gold prices retreated to $4,549.15 per ounce on Friday, reacting to a decline in U.S. consumer sentiment that overshadowed a slight cooling in short-term inflation expectations. The metal's slide coincided with broader market volatility following Federal Reserve commentary and updated labor market data.

Gold slips below $4,550 as consumer sentiment hits 51.7

The University of Michigan’s final August reading of 51.7 beat economist forecasts of 51, yet marked a sharp decline from July’s 55.2 level. Joanne Hsu, director of the Surveys of Consumers, noted that the drop reflects widespread anxiety, with sentiment falling across all political affiliations. Vulnerable demographics, including lower-income households and older consumers, reported the most significant declines in confidence.

Economic outlooks are darkening, with expected business conditions falling by 10% for the year ahead and 13% over the five-year horizon. While year-ahead inflation expectations eased to 4.0% from 4.2% in July, they remain significantly elevated compared to February levels. Meanwhile, long-run expectations held firm at 3.3%. Gold remains sensitive to these shifting outlooks, currently trading down 0.99% as investors weigh geopolitical tensions and domestic economic uncertainty.
