Gold Stalls as Markets Await Fed Chair Warsh and Payroll Data

Spot gold prices edged lower to $4,593.20 an ounce on Friday as investors braced for Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s first Jackson Hole keynote. Traders are balancing potential interest rate shifts against incoming Labor Department payroll benchmarks, leaving the precious metal in a tight consolidation range ahead of the 10 a.m. ET catalysts.

Gold Stalls as Markets Await Fed Chair Warsh and Payroll Data

The market’s caution stems from a conflicting economic signal. While recent GDP and durable-goods data have remained firm, cooling retail sales and lower headline PPI have left the probability of a September rate hike hovering near 34%. Warsh’s remarks will be scrutinized for a hawkish pivot that could bolster Treasury yields, effectively capping gold’s recent momentum. Simultaneously, the Labor Department is set to release a preliminary benchmark estimate for payrolls through March 2026, a critical report following July's unexpected 23,000-job decline.

Silver has decoupled from gold’s stagnation, surging 1.50% to $70.170 as industrial demand provides a stronger floor. Gold, by contrast, continues to struggle against resistance at $4,604. Capital.com analyst Kyle Rodda described the broader price action as constructive, yet gold remains tethered to the dollar and long-yield channels. Geopolitical tension in the Strait of Hormuz adds another layer of complexity; while oil prices near $83.46 a barrel keep a risk premium in the market, any inflation surge triggered by energy costs could further complicate the Federal Reserve’s path to holding rates steady.
