The Sandbox to Compensate Users After $700,000 Bridge Exploit

The Sandbox will reimburse eligible SAND holders following an August 21 security breach that drained 14.7 million tokens from its Ethereum vault. The project intends to cover the losses directly from its treasury, ensuring no new tokens are minted to settle the liabilities caused by the compromised bridge infrastructure.

The Sandbox to Compensate Users After $700,000 Bridge Exploit

The exploit originated from a configuration flaw in SAND contracts deployed on Base and BNB Smart Chain. This vulnerability allowed an attacker to bypass standard verification protocols and mint over 339 trillion unbacked SAND tokens. While the sheer volume of minted tokens appeared massive, the project confirmed that the actual impact on legitimate, backed assets was limited to roughly 14.7 million SAND, valued at approximately $700,000 at the time of the incident.

To facilitate the repayment, The Sandbox will distribute Ethereum-based SAND to users who held legitimate bridged balances on the affected chains before the attack. The process will be handled automatically for the majority of users, as two centralized exchanges hold over 72% of the affected balances and will distribute replacements directly. Other eligible holders can expect a claims portal to open within two weeks, with a subsequent two-week window for submission. Following the breach, the project opted to permanently retire the compromised bridge contracts rather than attempting to restore them.
