The alliance represents 3,283 member banks holding a combined $21.8 trillion in assets, according to Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. data. While the associations have formed the backbone of the initiative, individual financial institutions have not yet formally committed to the network. Kathy Kraninger, chair of the alliance and CEO of the Florida Bankers Association, stated that the project seeks to ensure that regional, rural, and urban institutions have a direct role in shaping the future of their payment systems.
BankChain is currently evaluating technology providers through a request-for-proposals process, prioritizing regulatory compliance as a core design requirement. The proposed infrastructure is intended to be interoperable with other financial systems while allowing participating banks to serve as owners. This ownership model aims to provide smaller institutions with equal access to advanced payment tools, distinguishing the project from initiatives led by larger money-center banks. As the alliance moves toward its 2027 launch, it faces a competitive landscape that includes separate tokenized deposit projects from The Clearing House and various global banking consortiums.
