Founder Matthew Gould confirmed that the expenses involved in compliance, application fees, and potential auction battles for extensions like .crypto and .wallet far outweighed projected sales revenue. While these assets will remain functional as on-chain identifiers for cryptocurrency wallets and decentralized applications, they will not achieve the universal browser compatibility that ICANN recognition provides. The company has begun notifying affected users of a refund process, though specific timelines and eligibility criteria remain undisclosed.

This move marks a significant departure from the company's 2019 strategy to bridge the gap between blockchain-based naming and the standard web. Despite exiting the application process for its own portfolio, Unstoppable Domains remains active within the ICANN ecosystem as a technical service provider for third-party projects, including Telegram’s proposed .gram domain. Meanwhile, other major players in the space, such as the Ethereum Name Service, continue their own independent efforts to secure conventional domain status for their protocols.
