USDC Dominates Autonomous AI Payments via x402 Protocol

Nearly every payment processed through the x402 agent-payment protocol now moves through USDC, according to Circle’s latest quarterly data. As autonomous AI agents proliferate, the stablecoin has emerged as the preferred unit of account for machine-to-machine transactions, accounting for 99.3% of volume within the specific x402 ecosystem.

USDC Dominates Autonomous AI Payments via x402 Protocol

Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire highlighted this shift during an August 19 earnings webcast, framing autonomous agent finance as a critical growth frontier. The x402 protocol, which leverages the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code, allows agents to authorize payments for data, computing resources, and APIs without human intervention. By providing a stable, dollar-denominated asset, USDC allows these agents to settle transactions rapidly and predictably.

Circle’s Agent Stack, launched in May 2026, currently supports over 900 paid services. While the 99.3% figure reflects activity within the x402 framework rather than the entire AI market, it signals a broader trend of blockchain integration for machine-led commerce. Beyond autonomous payments, Circle reported strong financial health, with USDC circulation reaching $73.3 billion—a 19% year-over-year increase—and quarterly transaction volume surging 151% to $14.8 trillion.

Looking ahead, the company is preparing for the September 16 public mainnet launch of Arc. This infrastructure is expected to provide enhanced tools for programmable agent finance, including privacy features and support for tokenized assets. Success for the platform will hinge on whether developers and financial institutions transition from limited pilots to full-scale deployment of live services.
