India to Trial Tokenized Corporate Bonds via Digital Rupee

India is set to pilot its first tokenized corporate bond issuance next month, utilizing the state-owned financier REC to test blockchain-based settlement. The initiative, involving the Reserve Bank of India and market regulators, aims to determine if distributed ledger technology can replace traditional, slower electronic book-building systems for debt.

The offering, valued at less than 5 billion rupees ($57 million), will require participants to manage two distinct digital accounts: a wholesale central bank digital currency wallet for cash settlement and a specialized DEMAT 2.0 wallet for holding the tokenized securities. By integrating these systems, the Reserve Bank of India intends to enable near-instantaneous transfers of assets between authorized participants, bypassing conventional clearinghouse infrastructure.

Access to this initial pilot remains restricted to a select group of institutional investors to ensure regulatory oversight during the testing phase. Following a mandatory three-month lock-in period for the bonds, exchanges expect to facilitate secondary market trading by December. This project marks a significant shift in India’s financial landscape, as regulators work to distinguish institutional tokenization of regulated assets from the country’s more restrictive stance on private cryptocurrencies and speculative digital tokens.
