Houthis Strike Saudi Tanker in Escalating Red Sea Campaign

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed the strike was part of an ongoing "siege for siege" operation aimed at disrupting Saudi maritime interests. Beyond the tanker assault, the group reported two additional operations targeting Saudi military convoys in the Al-Abr and Al-Wadi'ah regions, claiming the destruction of over ten trucks carrying equipment. Saree further stated that a second strike in the Al-Kanais area resulted in dozens of casualties, including high-ranking officers, alongside the destruction of several weapons depots.

This aggressive posture follows a series of recent pledges by the Iran-aligned militants to target Saudi troop concentrations and supply chains anywhere within the region. Iranian officials have since bolstered this rhetoric, with Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesman Brig. Gen. Hossein Mohebbi publicly questioning the Saudi military’s ability to counter the Houthi offensive. While maritime traffic through critical chokepoints like the Bab al-Mandeb Strait has shown resilience, the shift in security risks remains acute. Saudi Arabia has already begun rerouting its oil exports to mitigate the impact of the blockade, even as the Houthis insist that their naval measures are effectively paralyzing regional shipping lanes.
