X weighs stablecoin payouts as creator revenue model shifts

Elon Musk’s social platform is evaluating the integration of USDC and other stablecoins to compensate content creators, signaling a potential shift toward blockchain-based settlements. This exploration coincides with the upcoming September 8 launch of the "Original Content Rewards" program, which replaces the company’s existing revenue-sharing structure.

The platform is currently in active discussions regarding stablecoin integration, though no specific token or launch timeline has been finalized. By adopting a dollar-linked asset like Circle’s USDC, X could streamline global payments, bypassing the complexities of disparate international banking systems. While the company has yet to confirm whether these digital assets would serve as a default or an optional payout method, the move reflects a broader ambition to weave financial infrastructure into the user experience.

This initiative follows the recent debut of X Money in the United States, a service offering deposit accounts and debit cards backed by Cross River Bank. Unlike the bank-dependent X Money, stablecoin payouts would introduce the intricacies of blockchain transactions—such as wallet verification and irreversible transfers—into the creator economy. Any implementation for U.S. users would be subject to the federal framework established by the GENIUS Act, which sets strict reserve and compliance standards for issuers. As the company prepares to transition to its new rewards system, the potential adoption of digital assets highlights a push to integrate crypto-native settlement into its evolving financial ecosystem.
