Tajikistan Seeks Iranian Oil as Russian Export Bans Cripple Supply

Transport Minister Azim Ibrohim confirmed that over 80% of Tajikistan’s fuel previously originated from Russia, a pipeline now severed by Moscow’s aggressive export restrictions. These bans, intended to stabilize Russia’s own domestic market, follow persistent Ukrainian drone strikes that have crippled key refinery infrastructure for months. The resulting supply vacuum has left Dushanbe scrambling for alternatives to keep its economy operational.

The proposed deal with Tehran encompasses 2 million tons of crude oil, alongside 150,000 tons of gasoline, 300,000 tons of diesel, and 100,000 tons of jet fuel. While this shift provides a potential lifeline, it places Tajikistan in a precarious geopolitical position. The request coincides with heightened warnings from the United States regarding economic consequences for nations that engage in trade with the Islamic Republic, potentially complicating the logistics of the transition.
