Swift Connects HSBC and Standard Chartered in Blockchain Pilot

The transaction functioned as a coordination layer, allowing two independently operated systems to communicate. Swift’s ledger matched and netted payment obligations between the banks before recording the results on each institution’s internal infrastructure. While the test proved the viability of cross-platform interoperability, the actual settlement of funds still relied on existing legacy banking systems rather than full on-chain completion.

HSBC utilized its Tokenised Deposit Service—currently active in six markets including the U.S. and Hong Kong—to record its obligations, while Standard Chartered employed its own proprietary infrastructure. The pilot is part of a broader rollout involving seventeen banks across six continents, including major players like Citi, UBS, and Wells Fargo. Swift intends for this ledger to preserve established compliance and credit controls while enabling around-the-clock processing of deposit instructions.

Despite the successful test, the banks did not disclose specific details regarding the transaction’s value, participating jurisdictions, or a timeline for commercial launch. Executives from both institutions framed the event as a step toward seamless financial services, yet the system remains in a controlled testing phase. Future iterations will focus on scaling liquidity management and expanding support across a wider array of currencies and operating conditions.
