Rosatom Advances Uzbek Nuclear Training Amid Financial Uncertainty

While Russian nuclear giant Rosatom faces mounting pressure to slash international projects, the company is moving forward with a specialized training program for Uzbekistan’s future reactor personnel. The initiative aims to prepare technicians for an integrated facility, combining large-scale power units with experimental small modular reactors in the Jizzakh region.

Rosatom Advances Uzbek Nuclear Training Amid Financial Uncertainty

Rosatom specialists are currently drafting training modules tailored to the unique technical requirements of small modular reactors. According to Uzbekistan’s nuclear energy agency, the collaboration will culminate in a dedicated center near the plant site, located approximately 125 miles southwest of Tashkent. This facility is expected to host hundreds of trainees, providing a foundation for the country’s emerging nuclear workforce through Russian-developed methodologies.

The project’s progress persists despite broader instability within Rosatom’s portfolio. In July, CEO Alexei Likhachev signaled that poor economic conditions, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and international sanctions, would force the company to abandon or postpone several ventures. While officials have not clarified if the Uzbek plant remains a financial priority, the investment in human capital suggests the Kremlin maintains a strong geopolitical interest in securing its foothold in Central Asia.
