Robinhood’s RVII venture fund slips 10% in NYSE debut

The fund, trading under the ticker RVII, offers individual investors a way to participate in early- and growth-stage companies typically reserved for institutional players. Its portfolio contains roughly 80 private businesses, many of which share ties to the Y Combinator startup accelerator. While the fund provides exposure to high-profile names, it does not grant shareholders direct ownership or voting rights in the underlying companies.

Portfolio manager Rich Aberman frames the vehicle as a frontier for retail finance, aiming to bridge the wealth gap between Silicon Valley and everyday investors. However, the debut highlights the inherent volatility of closed-end funds. Because RVII trades as a business development company, market demand can cause share prices to decouple from the net asset value of the portfolio. This gap was evident from the opening bell, leaving IPO participants immediately underwater compared to the secondary market price.

Risk remains a significant factor for potential buyers. Unlike the firm’s first venture fund, RVI—which focuses on more mature private companies—RVII targets younger ventures that may lack steady revenue and face longer paths to public liquidity. Shareholders face a complex fee structure, including a 2% management fee and a 20% incentive fee on realized gains, with total annual expenses estimated at roughly 4.18%. Despite the rocky start, Robinhood is already planning further expansion, with head of venture Sarah Pinto confirming that development for funds three through six is already underway.
