Nigel Farage faces renewed ethics probe following Clacton by-election

Nigel Farage has returned to the House of Commons after a landslide victory in the Clacton by-election, a result that automatically reactivated a parliamentary inquiry into his financial disclosures. Officials are now examining whether the Reform UK leader failed to register millions in personal gifts and support from crypto-linked donors.

Nigel Farage faces renewed ethics probe following Clacton by-election

The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards reopened the case on Friday, targeting a $6.7 million payment Farage received from billionaire investor Christopher Harborne. While Farage previously characterized the funds as an unconditional personal gift for his Brexit campaigning, investigators are assessing whether the financial interest should have been formally declared under House of Commons rules. The probe also covers various benefits, including security, transport, and accommodation, allegedly provided by his adviser George Cottrell.

Farage has consistently denied wrongdoing, labeling prior media reports on these arrangements as a hit job and maintaining that he adhered to all requirements during his time outside of Parliament. Because the investigation was paused when he resigned his seat in July, his reelection creates a new disclosure window. The commissioner must now determine if these assets fall within the mandatory reporting period for the year preceding his return to office.

While a negative finding would not trigger an automatic removal, it could set the stage for a recall petition if the House of Commons imposes a suspension of at least 10 sitting days. Beyond the immediate inquiry, the broader political landscape remains sensitive to such ties. Labour lawmakers are currently pushing for a permanent ban on cryptocurrency-linked political donations, citing concerns over foreign influence and the transparency of funding sources. These legislative efforts arrive as Reform UK continues to attract significant capital from figures within the digital asset industry, further intensifying scrutiny of the party's donor network.
