South Africa’s Top Court Halts Wild Coast Seismic Surveys

This decision marks a significant setback for the offshore sector, which continues to lag behind the rapid pace of exploration seen in neighboring Namibia. Despite the court’s intervention, Shell maintains that it remains committed to its broader South African exploration portfolio. The company holds environmental authorization to drill five ultra-deepwater exploration wells in the Northern Cape, a region forming part of the promising Orange Basin.

While the Wild Coast project remains blocked, Shell is currently pursuing a 60% operating interest in Block 2C through a farm-in agreement with the state-owned firm PetroSA. That deal, which awaits regulatory approval, involves a $25 million signing bonus and a multi-well drilling program worth up to $150 million. The ongoing legal friction highlights the divergence between South Africa’s potential and its permitting environment, even as Shell shifts its corporate strategy by divesting from downstream retail and refinery assets in the country.
