Alaska LNG Project Nears Final Investment Decision With New Buyer Talks

Developer Glenfarne Group is courting two additional buyers to secure the final offtake agreements needed for its $55-billion Alaska LNG project. By targeting 3 million metric tons in new commitments, the company aims to cross the 80% capacity threshold required to trigger a final investment decision on the massive Arctic export hub.

The project, which includes an 807-mile pipeline connecting North Slope gas fields to a liquefaction terminal in Nikiski, has gained significant momentum through federal support. President Trump has actively encouraged Japan and South Korea to invest in the venture as a strategic move to rebalance trade deficits with the United States. Energy Secretary Chris Wright noted that securing commercial offtakers remains the primary hurdle to finalizing the financing structure for the infrastructure.

Glenfarne Group, holding a 75% stake alongside the state-backed Alaska Gasline Development Corporation, has already secured agreements for 13 million of its 20-million-ton target. CEO Brendan Duval expressed confidence that the remaining capacity will be filled rapidly. To support the export logistics, Greece’s Danaos Corporation has committed $50 million to become the project's preferred tonnage provider, planning a fleet of specialized carriers to navigate the North Pacific.

Geography serves as a primary selling point for the venture. U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum highlighted that Alaskan ports offer a transit distance to East Asian markets roughly one-third that of Middle Eastern routes. By avoiding canal bottlenecks like Panama or Suez, the project promises both reduced shipping times and enhanced energy security. While the U.S. Gulf Coast currently dominates American LNG expansion, Alaska LNG offers a distinct Pacific-facing alternative as global demand for reliable, accessible energy continues to rise.
