US Crude Stocks Surge as Imports Outpace Market Expectations

A massive 9.072 million barrel surplus in U.S. crude oil inventories blindsided analysts, who had anticipated a modest draw. The American Petroleum Institute data for the week ending August 7 reveals a sharp pivot in supply dynamics, driven largely by a surge in crude imports that outweighed domestic export activity.

This unexpected accumulation stands in stark contrast to the preceding seventeen weeks, which saw commercial inventories shed over 49 million barrels. While the year-to-date trend remains positive at 1.88 million barrels, the recent build highlights the volatility currently gripping the energy sector. Simultaneously, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve continues to deplete, dropping another 6.1 million barrels to reach 298.7 million—dangerously close to the operational floor of 250 million barrels.

Domestic production continues its steady ascent, climbing to 13.804 million barrels per day. Despite the inventory glut, global markets remain jittery; Brent crude climbed to $89.08 and WTI reached $84.22 as tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz persist. Meanwhile, refined products are tightening, with gasoline inventories falling by 1.531 million barrels and distillates dropping by 596,000 barrels, both of which remain significantly below their five-year averages.
