Twenty One Capital reports $413.5M loss as Bitcoin volatility bites

A sharp decline in the fair market value of Bitcoin holdings drove a $413.5 million net loss for Twenty One Capital during the second quarter of 2026. The NYSE-listed firm, which maintains one of the largest corporate Bitcoin reserves, saw nearly 97% of its quarterly deficit tied to accounting adjustments for its crypto assets.

Twenty One Capital reports $413.5M loss as Bitcoin volatility bites

The company’s latest financial statement highlights the risks of its treasury-heavy model, where fluctuations in cryptocurrency prices translate directly into reported earnings. While the $401.5 million loss related to Bitcoin valuation represents a significant paper deficit, it does not necessarily signal a cash outflow. The firm sold only a single Bitcoin during the first quarter, recording a nominal gain on that disposal, while the vast majority of the reported losses stem from the revaluation of its ongoing holdings.

New CEO Raphael Zagury is now tasked with shifting the firm’s strategy to mitigate this reliance on pure market performance. Since taking the helm on July 20, Zagury has signaled a move toward building an operating company that generates consistent cash flow. His strategic roadmap includes aggressive acquisitions, the expansion of capital markets services, and the introduction of Bitcoin-backed loans. These efforts aim to provide the institution with the governance and operational rigor required to distinguish its stock from a standard spot Bitcoin ETF. As the company navigates this transition, it must also manage internal governance hurdles, including recent compliance warnings from the NYSE regarding its audit committee structure following a shift in shareholder control toward Tether.
