U.S. Backs Australian Scandium Project to Bypass Chinese Supply Chains

The U.S. Department of Defense has pledged a $400-million conditional loan to Sunrise Energy Metals, aiming to break a critical dependency on Chinese scandium production. The funding targets the Syerston project in New South Wales, effectively securing a domestic supply line for aerospace and defense manufacturing through a 25-year debt facility.

Shares of the Australian miner surged 29% following the announcement. The move addresses a stark market imbalance where foreign entities currently control nearly 100% of global scandium processing. By financing the Syerston site, the U.S. Office of Strategic Capital intends to establish a primary, Western-aligned source for the metal, which is typically only harvested as a minor by-product of other industrial operations.

Sunrise Energy Metals will use the capital to build a complete value chain, spanning from high-grade extraction to metallization and additive manufacturing. Under the agreement, the U.S. government retains a right of first offer on the project's total output. Chairman Robert Friedland described the deal as a landmark alignment with the U.S.-Australia Partnership on critical minerals, noting that secure access to these resources now dictates national security and technological leadership. This investment arrives as part of a broader $3-billion U.S. initiative to reclaim dominance in the global critical minerals sector.
