CNOOC Activates World’s First 16MW Floating Wind Turbine

Floating 136 kilometers off the coast in the Pearl River Mouth Basin, the Haiyou Anlan platform has officially begun supplying power to the Lufeng Oilfield. This 16-megawatt tension-leg facility represents a significant technological leap for deep-sea energy, designed specifically to endure the volatile weather conditions of the South China Sea.

The project connects to the offshore oilfield grid through a 4.3-kilometer subsea cable. By integrating wind energy with existing fuel generation and storage, the China National Offshore Oil Corporation aims to mitigate power volatility while decarbonizing its extraction operations. The company anticipates the installation will generate 54 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, effectively displacing 15,000 cubic meters of fuel oil. This transition is projected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 35,000 tons each year, demonstrating a shift toward the firm's "oil and gas plus new energy" strategy. Unlike fixed-bottom turbines, this tension-leg platform offers a viable pathway for harvesting wind resources in deep-water environments where conventional structures remain impractical.
