Hackers Breach Liechtenstein Register of Beneficial Owners

Unknown attackers infiltrated Liechtenstein's registry of beneficial owners during the night of July 29, copying sensitive data belonging to 31,000 companies, foundations, and trusts. The principality’s government detected the intrusion after irregularities surfaced in the system, prompting an immediate shutdown of the affected digital infrastructure.

The breach targets a register established in 2021 to bolster anti-money laundering protocols within the nation, a jurisdiction known for its dense concentration of low-tax trusts. Authorities confirmed that while data was copied, there is no evidence that the underlying information was altered or deleted during the unauthorized access.

Simon Tribelhorn, director of the Liechtenstein Bankers Association, moved to contain fallout for the financial sector, stating that banks and their specific customer databases remain untouched. The government has formed a crisis task force overseen by Prime Minister Brigitte Haas and Justice Minister Emanuel Schaedler to manage the recovery and begin the process of notifying affected legal entities.
